John George’s Grave -George Family of Spartanburg Co., SC

By Brandon

In 1795 a survey was conducted for William Poole in Spartanburg County, 96 District, South Carolina.  This plat was for 23 acres of land which included the “Healing Springs”.  It was situated on the south side of the Pacolet River near Lawson’s Fork.  Neighbors included Henry Pettit Sr, as well as Rutledge and Henderson.

In 1795 a man named John George was buried next to this land in a grave yard that appears on the survey.  Four small squares on the plat indicate the location of the graves.  These graves may have been overgrown and forgotten.

As of today (June 16, 2025) this land still belongs to the descents of William Poole. I visited the Healing Springs in 2016 and noted that the area around the river was extremely thick with brush.  I was told that the spring was silted in in the great Pacolet flood in 1903 and had to be excavated.  The graves may have been covered at that time as well.   I have not researched the George family of Spartanburg County.  If you have and know who this John George might be, please leave a comment with info below.
