Any descendants of Joshua (b1734) and Rachel Pettit of Spartanburg SC out there?
I would like to know if anyone is researching this family. Joshua Pettit is said to have been born in 1734 and moved from NJ to VA to Spartanburg Co., SC. He was married to Rachel and possibly a Hannah. They had several children including, Mary, Hannah, Henry, Joshua, John, Benjamin, Nathan, Abraham, and Rachel. I am a descendant of his son Henry who was born in 1763 in NJ and fought in Roebuck's Regiment in the Revolutionary War.
Anyone interested in the history of this family please drop me a note on this forum. I'd love to share so history with you.

Was looking on Ancestry.com and shows a William Poole Pettit as the furthest researched in the public family tree I was looking at. Don't know if this is the same Pettit's.

It hard to say but I bet that is William P. Pettit the son of Joshua Pettit and Judith Pool. Are you related to this branch?
-
My name is Charity Velasquez (Pettit), my grandfather was Robert Pettit from South Carolina, I think he may be related.
-
Hi Charity,
Do you know what branch of the SC Pettit's you belong to? Who is your earliest known ancestor?
-
Hi, I have family from Roebuck

Hi Brandon. I am a descendant and live about four miles from the Pettit Family Cemetery. I am the marketing and tourism director for Gaffney (present day Cherokee County), South Carolina and am the project manager of converting our abandoned Carnegie Library building into a state of the art Revolutionary War Discovery Center. I have tons of Pettit research in my office (and I think I have a copy of old Joshua’s will). I will look and would be honored to share it with you if I am correct. I am Old Joshua’s 6th great granddaughter- 5th great of Joshua and JudithPettit.

Hi. Joshua Pettit II was my 6th great grandfather. My grandfather was Clarence Pettit.

I have been trying to research my Pettit ancestors on Ancestry and Family Search. Some of the ways those sites present information is very confusing, as they purport to show that I am related to some people just because someone else on there has said so, which is not enough information for me. I'd like to see some proof. Many of my first cousins have been on Ancestry and they say that our line is grandfather Joseph Cephus Pettit b. 1852, whose father was Ashford Pettit b. 1814, whose father was Nathaniel H. Pettit b. 1792, whose father was Joshua Pettit b 1773, whose father was Joshua Pettit b. 1734. However, I have never been able to find any proof that Nathaniel H. Pettit was Ashford's father. Everything is made even more confusing by the names being used over and over again. Ashford did have a son Nathan, and also a son Nathaniel. Does anyone know anything about Ashford?

DyanaG, Thanks for the comments. I agree with you completely. These sites encourage replication and propagation of proven errors due the nature of how they are organized. They are basically the modern equivalent of the old family group sheets... anyone can say anything and get it replicated like a computer virus.
Regarding Nathaniel H. Pettit being the son of Joshua Pettit and Judith Poole, I believe this is "Nathan" and not "Nathaniel H." The confusion on this is quite common, especially since some researchers refuse to accept the fact that these were two different men. You may want to check out a couple of articles on this issue: 1) Nathaniel H Pettit b. 1813 and Nathan Pettit b. 1792. Which one is the son of Joshua Pettit Jr. and Judith Pettit? and 2): John Pettit (b. 1771) Forgotten Son of Joshua and Rachel Pettit of Spartanburg Co., SC
To be clear, I have no doubt that the Pettit clan in AL with which Ashford is found are the descendants of Joshua Pettit and Judith Poole. There has been a lot of discussion about Ashford Pettit for many years and as far as I know his parent's names remain a mystery. However, I believe there has been a recent YDNA test done to compare him with other Spartanburg Pettits. Not sure those results have been posted yet.
I haven't researched him very much, but I suspect a clue to finding his parents may lie in his unusual name. At the time, the given name Ashford was a one-off for the Pettit family. As you mentioned, they liked to reuse a common set of names; Henry, Joshua, Nathan, Benjamin etc.... Ashford could be his mother's maiden name. Just a thought.

Brandon, thanks for the information! I have looked and looked to find Ashford's parents.

Dyana - Greetings cousin!! I'm a 5th Great-grandson of Joshua, Jr., thus 6th Great-grandson of Joshua and Rachel. I live just north of Daytona Beach, FL and plan to travel to Cow Pens, SC in April to do a little maintenance on the cemetery found there several years ago. If anyone can provide me the actual location and any contact info, it would be really helpful. I'm a HS football coach and plan to work it into my trip to visit some of the college spring football practices while I'm up there.

Hi Doug! So far, I think that Joshua and Rachel were my 5th Great Grandparents, so we must be related! Have you had your DNA checked, and where?
I live in Durango, CO part of the year and Cassville, MO the other part. My husband and I will be travelling to Florida (Gainesville) this month (Feb) to race. We'll be going to Rockingham, NC in April to race, after visiting a friend in Orlando first. I thought about going to the place in NC where there is a monument to a relative of mine from my father's family (my mother was the Pettit) who was the first person that the British hung right before the Revolutionary War (Jonathan Merrill). I would really like to visit the Pettit Cemetery in SC but not sure we will. As for where it is, I think it is on someone's property, but I think they let Pettits visit. I know there is a woman on Ancestry who knows where it is, and I will try to find that and get in touch with her. I looked it up on Find A Grave and there are no GPA coordinates and no location info there, no map. Check back here in a week or so.
Glad to "meet" you!

I am descended from Joshua Pettit and Rachel, my 5th great-grandparents. My line is through their son Henry who married Anna Poole, their son Henry who married Anna Mooney, their son John Fulton Pettit who married Rebecca Griffith, their daughter Sarah who married William A. Simmons Jr., their daughter Bessie who married C. L. Osborn, their daughter Virginia, who was my mother. I have been doing research on the Pettit family for many years, but there are still so many unknowns in my tree. I am enjoying your website very much--thank you for all the work you have put into this, and thank you for sharing. Cathie Hudson

Doug, I have emailed the person on Ancestry who said they knew where the cemetery is but she has not answered me. I was re-reading all these posts and I see that (above) a person named LMoon has said they live about 4 miles from the cemetery, so they should be able to tell you how to get there.
-
Hi Cathie. We're pretty closely related then. I am also a descendant of Henry Pettit Jr.

We're you able to make the trip and do cleanup, Doug?
