Immigration of Pettits to Canada

My mother, Rita Pettit, told me that the Pettit family had immigrated to Canada from New York in the middle of the 19th century and homesteaded in Southern Ontario, Canada, near the present day community of Stoney Creek. My grandfather was Brook Pettit who owned a farm across the Grand River from York, Ontario where my mother was born in 1902.

Have you any information that would tie my grandparents to settlers or families in the United Sates that may have come to Canada in the 19th century.
