If you run across anyone claiming Thomas and Katherine Pettit were from Littletown, they have confused the two men.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Thomas Pettit and Katherine of Rappahannock River Settlement ~1655<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The first appearance of\u00a0 Thomas Pettit is in 1655, when he helped <strong>Clement Thresh<\/strong> inventory the estate of a William Ireland. <em>Virginia Colonial Abstracts<\/em><span class=\"addmd\"> by Beverley Flee<\/span>t abstracted this on p155 as seen below:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pettitresearch.com\/familyhistory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Inventory-of-William-Ireland.-1655-Thomas-Pettit-Virginia.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-840 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/pettitresearch.com\/familyhistory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Inventory-of-William-Ireland.-1655-Thomas-Pettit-Virginia.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"627\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pettitresearch.com\/familyhistory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Inventory-of-William-Ireland.-1655-Thomas-Pettit-Virginia.png 627w, https:\/\/pettitresearch.com\/familyhistory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Inventory-of-William-Ireland.-1655-Thomas-Pettit-Virginia-300x114.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 627px) 100vw, 627px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe next mention of Thomas Pettit in the record is in Rappahannock County, VA on September 3, 1656. On page 127 of the Rappahannock County Deed Book #2, <strong>Francis Goare (Gower)<\/strong> is recorded as having sold 280 acres to Thomas Pettit.\u00a0 At the time, this land was in the county of Stafford on the Rappahanock River and on the east side of <strong>Hoskins Creek<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The next year, Thomas Pettit is mentioned in the inventory of the estate of<strong> Clement Thresh<\/strong> in September of 1657.\u00a0 Thomas Pettit owed Mr. Thresh a debt of 456lbs (of tobacco).\u00a0 Other debtors to Mr. Thresh listed in this inventory include William Brownhill, Richard Coleman, John Willis, <strong>John Goar (Gower)<\/strong>,\u00a0 William Wood, William Johnson, and <strong>Thomas Goodrich<\/strong>.\u00a0 These men were mostly from the Rappahannock River area.\u00a0 A snippet of this old document is shown below.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_850\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pettitresearch.com\/familyhistory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Thomas-Pettit-John-Goar-Clement-Thresh-1657-Virginia.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-850\" class=\"wp-image-850 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/pettitresearch.com\/familyhistory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Thomas-Pettit-John-Goar-Clement-Thresh-1657-Virginia-1024x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pettitresearch.com\/familyhistory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Thomas-Pettit-John-Goar-Clement-Thresh-1657-Virginia-1024x300.png 1024w, https:\/\/pettitresearch.com\/familyhistory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Thomas-Pettit-John-Goar-Clement-Thresh-1657-Virginia-300x88.png 300w, https:\/\/pettitresearch.com\/familyhistory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Thomas-Pettit-John-Goar-Clement-Thresh-1657-Virginia-768x225.png 768w, https:\/\/pettitresearch.com\/familyhistory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Thomas-Pettit-John-Goar-Clement-Thresh-1657-Virginia.png 1288w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-850\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Inventory of Clement Thresh showing debtors which include Thomas Pettit, Thomas Goodrich, and John Goar<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Thomas Goodrich, who was listed on this inventory with Pettit, was a back-country planter who would earn a place in the history books for his role in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bacon%27s_Rebellion\">Bacon&#8217;s Rebellion<\/a>.\u00a0 In 1676, he was fined a staggering 50,000 lbs tobacco after he, along with his son Benjamin Goodrich, had led troops against Governor William Berkley&#8217;s soldiers.\u00a0 Thomas Goodrich was a colonel in the militia during the uprising.\u00a0 He was unable to pay the hefty fine and forfeited some of his land to cover it.\u00a0 This land became present day Tappahannock (seen in the map below.)\u00a0 Note the name of the creek that runs through Tappahannock into the Rappahannock River: <strong>Hoskins Creek<\/strong>. Daughter &amp; her heirs for Ever but ye Male to remaine to those that look after them until she come of age I do also give and bequeath all my Land ye is Really mine ye is to say a pattent of one hundred acres adjoining to ye Land I now live on ye which Land encludes two hundred &amp; Eighty acres by conveyance specified this Land heretofore mentioned my aforesaid Daughter Dorothy is to have when she cometh to age for her &amp; her heirs for Ever, and in case of ye death of my aforesd. Daughter Dorothy before she cometh to Enjoy this Land according to ye term of my will then the sd Land here given unto my Daughter to my Wife Katherine for her &amp; her heirs for Ever &amp; in ye meantime untill my Daughter be of age as aforesd. <strong>my wife Katherine<\/strong> to inherit &amp; enjoy for her use in every kind whatsoever not destroying any timber nor to make sale nor diminish anymore than what shall go for ye use of her own housing and Cropps &amp; likewise I doe also include that in case my wife Katherine aforesd. keep her self a Widow that she shall freely and wh\u00bally enjoy the Land with the proffits thereof according to ye tenor aforesd. during her life I do also give &amp; bequeath unto my Wife after my Death my debts Satisfyed all ye rest of my personal Estate both within doors &amp; without unto her &amp; her hrs for Ever I doe also here ordaine and apoint my friend Nicholas White and my friend Thomas Cooper overseers of this my last will &amp; Testament ye day &amp; year above written<br \/>\n<b>Thomas Pettit<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0Seal<\/p>\n<p>Witnesses<br \/>\nRichard Glover, aged 37 years or thereabouts.<br \/>\nRichard Nightingale, aged 27 years of thereabouts<br \/>\nRobert Davis Cl. Cl.<br \/>\nTruly recorded according to an order of Essex Court dated ye. 11th: March, 1664<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In his will, Thomas Pettit divided his property between his two living heirs at the time; his wife Katherine and daughter Dorothy Pettit. This is evident from a 1698 deed where he sold land on Hoskins Creek.\u00a0 In this deed, his wife Rachel released her dower rights and named her brother Abraham Wilson as her lawful attorney.\u00a0 This deed was recorded in Essex County, VA, in Will and Deed Book II p312-313.<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy Pettit is also mentioned in various other documents of the area.\u00a0 In 1674 she was a witness to a deed between William Johnson and John Toyer[?] as seen below. His wife was pregnant at the time of his death.\u00a0 His son Thomas Pettit Jr. was born in the spring following his death.\u00a0 This Thomas Pettit Jr. married Rachel Wilson.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Pettit of the Rappahannock River settlement in Virginia is the ancestor of a number of Pettits in America today.\u00a0 Though the connection has not been verified by this researcher at the time of this writing, he was very likely the ancestor of all Pettits who trace their line to Surry County, NC.
