{"id":794,"date":"2021-02-12T18:22:38","date_gmt":"2021-02-12T18:22:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pettitresearch.com\/familyhistory\/?p=794"},"modified":"2025-06-28T20:13:14","modified_gmt":"2025-06-28T20:13:14","slug":"first-pettits-in-america-series-richard-pettit-virginia-immigrant-in-1636","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pettitresearch.com\/familyhistory\/2021\/02\/12\/first-pettits-in-america-series-richard-pettit-virginia-immigrant-in-1636\/","title":{"rendered":"First Pettits in America Series #1 &#8211;Richard Pettit; Virginia Immigrant in 1636"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Richard Pettit aka Rich Pettit; Immigrant to James City County, VA in 1636.\u00a0 Related documents.<\/h2>\n[NOTE: This is one of series of a articles created by <a href=\"https:\/\/pettitresearch.com\/familyhistory\">The Pettit Research Project<\/a> with the intent to identify and document various immigrants to American with the Pettit name.]\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 1636 <strong>Alexander Stomer (Stomar\/Stoner)<\/strong> transported four people to the colony of Virginia.\u00a0 In exchange for this, he was granted 200 acres.\u00a0 (50 acres per head).\u00a0 Two of the people transported were servants and two were free.\u00a0 They were: <strong>Alice Curby,<\/strong> <strong>Richard Pettit (Pettitt), Robert Pitwell <\/strong>and<strong> Sampson Doubte<\/strong>.\u00a0 Stomer deeded this property to <strong>Samuel Curby<\/strong> on July 9, 1636.<\/p>\n<p>Alice Curby was the wife of Samuel. Of the other three immigrants, it is not clear who were servants and who were free.\u00a0 It is possible Curby set up a small farm on this land and the servants worked there until they eared their freedom.\u00a0 It is also possible Curby had nothing to do with the transportation of anyone other than his wife.<\/p>\n<p>Below are some related documents to these people.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On October 29, 1636, the deed of sale between Curby and Stomer was recorded.\u00a0 An abstract of this record appears on page 110 of the book &#8220;<em>Cavaliers and Pioneers : A Calendar of Virginia Land Grants, 1623-1800<\/em>; vol. 1, No. 1-6 by Nell Nugent&#8221; as seen below:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pettitresearch.com\/familyhistory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Samuel-Crubye-John-Dansey-Alexander-Stomer.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-815\" src=\"https:\/\/pettitresearch.com\/familyhistory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Samuel-Crubye-John-Dansey-Alexander-Stomer-300x129.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"129\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pettitresearch.com\/familyhistory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Samuel-Crubye-John-Dansey-Alexander-Stomer-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/pettitresearch.com\/familyhistory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Samuel-Crubye-John-Dansey-Alexander-Stomer.png 439w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What appears to be an identical instrument this time listing immigrant names was filed the previous month on September 12, 1636, as seen on page 77 of <em>Cavaliers and Pioneers<\/em>:<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pettitresearch.com\/familyhistory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/samuel-curby-richard-pettit-virginia-1636.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-813\" src=\"https:\/\/pettitresearch.com\/familyhistory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/samuel-curby-richard-pettit-virginia-1636-300x184.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pettitresearch.com\/familyhistory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/samuel-curby-richard-pettit-virginia-1636-300x184.png 300w, https:\/\/pettitresearch.com\/familyhistory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/samuel-curby-richard-pettit-virginia-1636.png 472w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The land involved was on &#8220;Tanks Pasby Hayes Creek&#8221;.\u00a0 The precises location of the land is obscured by the fact the place names have completely changed over the centuries.\u00a0 Thankfully, other references to this creek shed light on its location. On page 83 of<em> Cavaliers and Pioneers, <\/em>a man named Theodore Moyses purchased 2,000 acres of land around Tanks Pasbye Hayes Creek on May 23, 1637.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pettitresearch.com\/familyhistory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Theodore-Moyses-tanks-pasby-hayes-creek.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-814 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/pettitresearch.com\/familyhistory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Theodore-Moyses-tanks-pasby-hayes-creek-226x300.png\" alt=\"John Notton, Franics Latner, William Foster, Edward Tenches, Alice Fuller, Jon Eles, Jon. Freepoint, Thomas Wakefeild, Arthuer Patient, Jon. Winchester, Edward Branton, Richard Thornton, Joanna Michell, Richard Cock, William Drummond, Francis Edsonne, Fr. Turner, Robert Roles, Euge. Boles, Robert Gaunt, William Hawkins, Henry Bradshaw, Richard Weston, Lewis Abshere, Ann Belsome, John Cooke, Robert Asten, Adrey Garrett, Katherine Hackwell, Edward Brutton, Thomas Monday, Richard Edwards, William Pinnock, John Hucock, William Baker, William Griffin, William Smith, Thomas Cragg and Edward Simpkins.\" width=\"226\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pettitresearch.com\/familyhistory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Theodore-Moyses-tanks-pasby-hayes-creek-226x300.png 226w, https:\/\/pettitresearch.com\/familyhistory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Theodore-Moyses-tanks-pasby-hayes-creek.png 388w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 226px) 100vw, 226px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Evidently the name was changed shortly thereafter to reflect the owner.\u00a0 It became Moyses Creek.<\/p>\n<p>From Moyses Creek the name was later changed again twice more.\u00a0 The historical marker for &#8220;Mt. Zion &amp; Rustic&#8221; in Charles City Co, VA, says the following:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>These communities were established on opposite banks of Morris Creek earlier known as Tanks Pasbye hayes the Indian name, Moyses Creek after Theodore Moyses who patented land there, and as Moses Creek. [CLICK TO ENLARGE]<\/p><\/div><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Though dates are given for when the land was granted, this is not necessarily the date of the arrival of Alice Curby and Richard Pettit to Virginia.\u00a0 It is possible they set foot on the Virginia shore weeks or months before July 9, 1636.<\/p>\n<p>Alexander Stomer, who was credited with their transport, was a brickmaker who had land near a\u00a0 brick kiln on James Island in 1636. He also acquired land near the mouth of the Tanks Pasby Hayes Creek on a &#8220;clay bank&#8221; called &#8220;Old Trucking point&#8221; as recorded patent book I, p469.\u00a0 (It is interesting that in 1637 when this was mentioned, the point was already considered &#8220;old&#8221;.)\u00a0 He was involved in other land transactions and is mentioned as an adjacent property owner to William Davis in a May 4, 1639, land grant to Davis. <em>Early Virginia Families Along the James River: Their Deep Roots and Tangled Branches,<\/em> by Foley, Louise Pledge Heath.
